The historical gap: <strong>\u201cCultural modernity\u201d ahead of \u201cinstitutional modernity\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p lang=\"en\">Culturally\u2014through literature, lifestyle, education, and media consumption\u2014Iran has become highly modern:<\/p>\n<ul lang=\"en\">\n<li>The idea of romantic love is firmly established<\/li>\n<li>Emotional individualism has grown<\/li>\n<li>Psychological freedom in choosing a partner has increased<\/li>\n<li>Egalitarian values have taken root in younger generations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p lang=\"en\">But institutional structures\u2014law, economy, family systems, regulations, and controlling norms\u2014remain more traditional than what younger generations desire.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\">This is what Asef Bayat calls <strong>\u201cunfinished modernity,\u201d<\/strong> and what Iranian sociologists describe as <strong>\u201cincomplete emotional modernity.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\"><strong>Result:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\">Modern individuality + non\u2011modern structure = tense and unstable relationships<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 lang=\"en\">2. The social gap:<\/h3>\n<p lang=\"en\"><strong>\u201cA multi\u2011generational society with conflicting value systems\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\">Iran essentially has four generations with four different emotional frameworks:<\/p>\n<ul lang=\"en\">\n<li>1940s\u201350s: family\u2011centered relationships<\/li>\n<li>1960s: transitional; a mix of traditional and modern<\/li>\n<li>1970s: individualistic; choice\u2011based relationships<\/li>\n<li>1980s\u201390s: maximum individualism + structural constraints<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p lang=\"en\">So when someone born in the 1970s enters a relationship, they must live in a space where:<\/p>\n<ul lang=\"en\">\n<li>Their parents hold a traditional view<\/li>\n<li>Society has a dual, contradictory view<\/li>\n<li>They themselves have a modern view<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p lang=\"en\">This degree of intergenerational value\u2011system conflict is rare globally.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\">Iran is almost unique in this regard.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 lang=\"en\">3.
